The unimaginative and limited approaches to how plastic is recycled are problematic. Current approaches are often not sufficiently economically resilient to survive downturns in the demand for recycled material. This is often due to a limited product range and dependence on a single off-take partner, but most of all to a low oil price, which makes it cheaper to manufacture products from virgin plastic than from recycled material.
